Sierra Solitaire Restaurant (CLOSED)
Reno Restaurant Review
Sierra Summit in Reno, Nevada is again a CLOSED
restaurant. Check our site for many other
great Reno dining choices...
Nestled in the tall pine trees off Mount Rose highway is
hidden Reno's Sierra Solitaire Restaurant. Known until 2005 as the
"Galena Forest Restaurant", the restaurant changed owners and names
in 2005. Occasionally, deer nibble on grass
outside the restaurant while diners enjoy their
meals. The restaurant is beautiful in any season, but winter snow
adds to the ambiance. Sierra Solitaire is a luxury restaurant for romantic dining during any
season.
We
paid a visit to Reno's Sierra Solitaire restaurant in May 2005,
after the restaurant had been open for only about two weeks.
While the restaurant showed great potential-- our meal did not
reflect the restaurant's intended focus of luxury, and quality
dining. Sierra Solitaire is quite formal. There is
extensive wait-staff (and great service!) entirely dressed in
tuxedos. The formal and high degree of service creates an
atmosphere and expectation of an excellent meal.
Sierra Solitaire's menu in Reno is extensive - but confusing.
There are almost 6-8 different entree pages split by fish, chicken,
beef, three-course combinations, and table prepared dishes.
There appeared to be great overlap between the menu sections and the
menu was somewhat overwhelming in its volume.
Noting that the restaurant was relatively new -- we had a number of
issues with our meal that were surprising.
-
Two different soup orders had cooking issues. An onion
soup was served lukewarm; and a lobster bisque with a pastry
shell was served with the pastry shell highly under cooked (ie
the pastry was still in a dough form). The restaurant
corrected and comped both of these issues.
-
An order of shrimp - although presented in an attractive manner
- was somewhat undercooked also.
-
A halibut order to be cooked "Veronique" was covered with a
great deal of a brown, sugary sauce. Although this may
have been the intended result - the preparation of the fish
(amount and sugary nature of sauce) were somewhat surprising.
-
Rice pilaf for the meals was a very basic preparation although
tasty.
Our
3rd dining patron had a steak that was excellent. In general -
while it was clear that Reno's Sierra Solitaire restaurant had high
intentions and was run by a long time Reno restaurateur-- issues
with the kitchen marred our dining experience. We are
confident that over time, this new addition to the South Reno dining
scene will build a quality dining experience.
The
restaurant features an excellent and extensive wine list
highlighting California red and white wines.
From Reno, take US 395 south. Exit at NV-431 (exit 56)
towards Mt. Rose/N. Lake Tahoe. Keep right to head West on 431.
Travel 4 miles. As the road narrows to two lanes, restaurant will be
on right-hand side.
